GPT and UrbanGrowth NSW jointly own properties over five blocks of central Newcastle centered on the Hunter Street Mall which total approximately 20,000m2 and are seeking to redevelop the site with a mix of retail, commercial, entertainment and residential uses.
At a wider level, the NSW Government plans to transform and revitalise Newcastle’s city centre to boost economic activity, making Newcastle a more vibrant place for locals and visitors, and reinforcing its role as a 21st century regional centre.
The initiatives will revitalise Hunter Street with activity focused on three key precincts to form a dynamic city centre offering, a range of experiences for the wider region and eight new crossings to link the city centre with the foreshore across the old rail corridor together with a proposed new light rail system.
Meld Strategies was engaged by GPT working in conjunction with Urban Growth NSW to develop a Concept Technology Master Plan for the Newcastle East End site based upon the needs of next generation cities of the 21st century.
The positioning of the Technology Masterplan was to aligned to the global trend for a smart, sustainable city that promote high-quality liveability, workability and sustainability.
The strategy and Technology Master Plan that was developed provided a context and rationale for the use of technologies in public realm, retail, residential and commercial spaces that can achieve a world class and internationally reputable outcome for the City of Newcastle.
